Koxarthrosis

Causes-Symptoms

It is a degenerative disease of the hip joint in adults of non-inflammatory origin. The onset degeneration of the articular cartilage and subsequent inflammation of the synovial membrane (synovitis) leads to deterioration of the bone and thus to increasing and painful joint damage. With regard to their cause, coxarthroses are divided into primary and secondary coxarthroses.

In primary arthroses, a cause for the disease cannot be found. Secondary coxarthroses account for about 80% of all osteoarthritis of the hip.
The most common causes are listed below:

• Congenital hip dysplasia and hip luxation
• Diseases and injuries of the hip joint in childhood (epiphyseal detachment, Perthes' disease)
• Infections in the area of the hip joint
• Rheumatoid arthritis
• Fractures.

Research methods

The diagnosis is confirmed by X-rays of the hip joint after a clinical examination.
Further examination methods such as computer tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are only necessary for certain questions (for example, evidence of femoral head necrosis) and after an X-ray has been taken.

Treatment options

When conservative treatment options have been exhausted, the only remaining treatment for coxarthrosis is the implantation of an artificial hip joint (endoprosthesis).
In our clinic about 500 endoprosthetic primary operations and revision operations in the area of the hip joint are performed per year. Depending on the individual initial situation of the patient, a variety of cementless or cemented prosthesis models are available.
In the case of loosening of an endoprosthesis, where larger bone defects in the area of the socket or the stem usually have to be treated, special implants or prostheses are used for these revision operations.
